Aremu Afolayan has issued a public apology to Nigerians after facing widespread criticism for remarks he made at a recent EKO57 campaign event backing President Bola Tinubu’s second-term bid.
The gathering, held on Sunday, brought together several Nollywood figures, including Yomi Fash-Lanso, Remi Surutu, and Adams Kehinde, to mobilise support ahead of the 2027 general election. During the event, Afolayan openly endorsed the president’s re-election and appeared to dismiss concerns about the rising cost of living and security challenges, describing reports of insurgency as “exaggerated” in a viral video.
The actor stated, “When you watch the news about insurgency, don’t mind them, it’s all scripted,” sparking backlash on social media, where many accused him of being insensitive and alleged he had been paid to make the remarks.
In a video posted to his Instagram page on Thursday, Afolayan apologised, saying his comments had been misunderstood. “I’m sorry. The curse has been too much, and I didn’t offend anyone but just went wrong… My heart is heavy because I’ve hurt a lot of Nigerians,” he said, acknowledging the seriousness of insecurity in the country.
He clarified that his intention was not to deny insecurity but to comment on media coverage, citing a personal example: “My best friend’s mother was kidnapped… How could I say there’s no insecurity? We didn’t bring it out because we had to pay millions of people to get her released.”
Following the controversy, Afolayan announced his withdrawal from partisan political activities, vowing not to support any candidate in future elections. He added that his participation in the EKO57 event was motivated by appreciation for improved access to local government officials rather than political allegiance.
“Due to this heat and curse I have received, I’m saying I’m at my lowest stage… I’m withdrawing from everything to do with politics and standing with my people. Please forgive me,” he said.
