Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, has honoured Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, with its Leadership and Service Award in recognition of his performance in governance and public service.
The award was presented during the university’s 24th Undergraduate Convocation Ceremony held on Sunday, where over 3,400 students graduated in the presence of academics, parents and other dignitaries.
Delivering the convocation lecture titled “Breaking New Ground: Faith, Grit and the Work of New Beginnings,” Governor Sanwo-Olu described leadership as a responsibility rooted in integrity, accountability and service to humanity.
He urged members of the 2026 Undergraduate NOVA Class to develop innovative solutions to societal challenges and engage government with evidence-based ideas capable of driving sustainable development.
The governor encouraged the graduates to remain focused, adaptable and committed to lifelong learning, stressing that success requires resilience and continuous self-improvement.
Reflecting on his administration, Sanwo-Olu said leadership is truly tested during periods of crisis, citing the COVID-19 pandemic and the #EndSARS protests as defining moments of his tenure.
He highlighted key achievements of his administration, including investments in transportation, education, healthcare, housing and technology.
According to him, Lagos State’s budget has increased from less than ₦900 billion in 2019 to ₦4.44 trillion in 2026, while the state was recognised by the Dealroom Global Tech Ecosystem Index in 2025 as the world’s fastest-growing technology ecosystem.
Sanwo-Olu also said his administration established two new state-owned universities, is completing what he described as the largest children’s hospital in sub-Saharan Africa, introduced digital learning in public schools and delivered thousands of housing units.
He commended Babcock University for its contributions to higher education and for producing graduates who continue to excel in different professions.
Speaking on behalf of the graduating students, Miss Simisola Abore described the academic journey as demanding but rewarding and urged her fellow graduates to uphold the institution’s values and contribute positively to society.
The university also recognised academic excellence, with Miss Amosu Oluwapelumi emerging as the Overall Best Full-Time Graduating Student and receiving a cash prize of ₦10 million. She attributed her achievement to consistency, discipline and hard work.
