Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of former Deputy Senate President Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has been released from a United Kingdom prison and has returned to Nigeria.
A source who spoke to Channels Television on condition of anonymity confirmed that Mrs. Ekweremadu, who had been sentenced to five years in prison by a UK court for her involvement in an organ harvesting case, arrived in the country on Tuesday.
According to the source, she is currently in Abuja following her release.
Mrs. Ekweremadu, her husband, and Dr. Obinna Obeta were convicted earlier in the year for their roles in an organ trafficking scheme, making headlines both locally and internationally. The UK court had handed down significant sentences, with Senator Ekweremadu receiving a nine-year jail term, while Dr. Obeta was sentenced to 10 years.
Further details on the circumstances of her release and her plans following her return to Nigeria remain unclear.
