The Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, has died. The lawmaker, born on December 2, 1965, passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, following a brief illness. She was 59 years old.
Until her demise, Onanuga represented the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State in the Green Chamber. Known affectionately as “Ijaya,” she was celebrated for her tireless advocacy for women’s empowerment and her commitment to improving social infrastructure for her constituents and the nation.
Tributes from the National Assembly
In a statement, the House of Representatives mourned her passing, describing her as a “passionate advocate” and a vibrant lawmaker dedicated to public service.
House spokesperson Akin Rotimi paid tribute to Onanuga’s impactful contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape.
“Affectionately known as ‘Ijaya,’ Rep. Onanuga’s intellect, passion, humility, and drive for excellence earned her admiration among her colleagues and constituents alike,” he said.
The House extended condolences to her family, friends, associates, and the people of Ogun State, particularly those in the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North constituency.
“As we mourn the loss of this vibrant and committed lawmaker, her legacy of service and dedication will continue to inspire future generations,” the statement added.
Governor Dapo Abiodun’s Condolence Message
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun described Onanuga’s death as a “monumental loss” to the state and the nation.
In a condolence message, the governor eulogized her as a fearless leader, a loyal party member, and a great mobilizer who championed policies to advance women’s welfare and uplift her constituents.
“Her passing is devastating and shocking. She was a beacon of hope and a symbol of selfless service until her final days,” Abiodun stated.
A Legacy of Service
Onanuga was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2019 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). During her first tenure, she served as Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development in the 9th Assembly. Her work in that capacity focused on empowering women and advancing social welfare.
Re-elected in 2023, she was appointed Deputy Chief Whip of the 10th Assembly, where she continued to advocate for policies aimed at improving the lives of Nigerians.
Funeral Arrangements
The family is expected to announce funeral arrangements in due course.
The House of Representatives, Ogun State government, and Nigerians nationwide mourn the loss of a dedicated public servant whose contributions will be remembered for generations.
