The Lagos State Government has dismissed reports that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu filed a lawsuit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to prevent any future arrest or prosecution after his tenure.
In a statement on Wednesday, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Lawal Pedro announced that the state will investigate how such a case could have appeared in the media without the governor’s knowledge.
“We clarify that Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has not, at any time, sued or instructed any legal practitioner to file a suit on his behalf regarding the subject,” the statement read. Pedro added that it would be implausible for the governor, who holds immunity under the Constitution and has nearly three years remaining in office, to engage in legal action of this kind.
Pedro also refuted claims that the EFCC was investigating Governor Sanwo-Olu, stating that the anti-corruption agency has neither invited nor threatened to arrest the governor or any member of his administration.
“Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has been exemplary in service delivery, and in the prudent management of public resources,” Pedro emphasized. “As a governor dedicated to improving the lives of Lagosians, he has no cause for concern when he completes his term in May 2027.”
The statement was issued following media reports headlined, “Sanwo-Olu Sues EFCC over Alleged Plan to Arrest, Prosecute Him After Tenure.”
