Embattled former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has defended his potential ambition to contest for governor in 2027, stating it is not a crime to aspire for the position.
Speaking during a press briefing at his residence in Ikeja GRA on Saturday, Obasa dismissed claims that he had declared an intention to succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
“Having an ambition to become a governor is not a sin,” Obasa said. “I have stated on the floor of the House during the budget presentation that I had no thoughts of governorship at the time. However, that does not mean I am unqualified or lack the experience. I still maintain that stance.”
Obasa also addressed his impeachment as Speaker, insisting he remains in the position until “the right thing is done.” He criticized the alleged militarization of the Assembly complex during the impeachment process and argued that his removal occurred in his absence while he was out of the country.
The former Speaker was removed from office on Monday, January 13, 2025, after more than two-thirds of the 40-member legislative house voted in favor of his impeachment over allegations of misconduct and other offenses.
His deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, was immediately sworn in as Speaker, making history as the first female leader of the Lagos legislative body.
Obasa, representing Agege Constituency I, was first elected to the Assembly in 2007 and served as Speaker from June 2015 until his impeachment in January 2025.
