JMG Solar, the renewable energy division of JMG Limited, has completed the installation and commissioning of a hybrid solar power system at St. Catherine Specialist Hospital in Abuja, a move aimed at enhancing energy reliability, reducing operational costs and supporting the hospital’s sustainability goals.
St. Catherine Specialist Hospital, a healthcare provider established in 1999 in Port Harcourt with a branch in Abuja opened in 2016, sought a stable and efficient power solution to support its commitment to delivering world-class healthcare services while reducing energy expenses and environmental impact.
Following a detailed assessment of the hospital’s energy requirements, JMG Solar designed and deployed a hybrid solar system comprising 92.8kWp of solar photovoltaic capacity, 65kW of hybrid inverter capacity and 160.8kWh of lithium battery storage.
The installation features 160 Longi solar panels rated at 580W each, three 20kW Deye hybrid inverters, one 5kW inverter and 30 Deye lithium batteries. The system also incorporates a smart monitoring platform that enables real-time performance tracking.
According to JMG Solar, the hybrid energy solution has significantly reduced the hospital’s reliance on diesel generators. Diesel consumption dropped from 2,000 litres per month to 1,000 litres per month within four months of operation, resulting in estimated savings of about N14 million on diesel purchases during the period.
The hospital’s monthly power expenditure also declined from approximately N7 million to N5 million, generating monthly savings of N2 million after lease fees, without requiring any capital expenditure from the healthcare facility.
The solar installation is expected to generate about 11.13MWh of electricity monthly, equivalent to 133.63MWh annually, enabling the hospital to meet its energy needs through a combination of solar generation and battery storage.
In addition to improving energy reliability for critical healthcare operations, the project is projected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 53,091 kilograms annually.
Commenting on the project, JMG representative Chisom Okoye said the 65kW hybrid solar solution, supported by 92.8kWp of solar power generation and 160.8kWh of lithium battery storage, has been successfully installed and commissioned.
