Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has praised the state’s security agencies for their role in maintaining peace and ensuring a conducive environment for economic activities to flourish.
The governor made the commendation during the grand finale of the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day held at the Remembrance Arcade, Government House, Agodi, Ibadan.
Addressing journalists at the end of the event, Makinde expressed gratitude to the officers and personnel of the Armed Forces for their dedication and efforts in safeguarding Oyo State. He urged them to remain steadfast in their commitment to security.
Commitment to Fallen Heroes
Governor Makinde reiterated his administration’s dedication to supporting wounded soldiers, widows, orphans, and dependents of fallen heroes, acknowledging their sacrifices in ensuring the country’s safety.
During the event, the governor presented a brand new car to retired Major Rasaki Salawu, the pioneer Director of Operations of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), in recognition of his contributions to the state, particularly through the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority.
Support for Legionnaires
The Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Oyo State Command, Deputy Commandant General Julius Ogunkojo, expressed appreciation for the governor’s generosity, including donations toward the launch of the emblem and support for legionnaires across Oyo State’s 33 local government areas.
Highlights of the Ceremony
The event featured the laying of wreaths at the remembrance cenotaph by Governor Makinde and other dignitaries, including:
Rt. Honourable Adebo Ogundoyin, Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly.
Justice Iyabo Yerima, Chief Judge of Oyo State.
Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin (Ige Olakulehin I), Olubadan of Ibadanland (represented by Asipa Olubadan, Oba Abiodun Kola-Daisi).
Major General O.G. Onubogu, General Officer Commanding, 2 Division Nigerian Army.
Other participants included senior military officers, law enforcement chiefs, and representatives of fallen heroes’ widows. The ceremony also featured a 21-gun salute, special prayers for the fallen heroes, and the ceremonial release of pigeons by Governor Makinde.
