An aspirant for the Idemili North and South Federal Constituency, Ifeanyi Metuh, has called for strict adherence to zoning and rotation principles in Anambra State’s political structure, particularly ahead of the 2027 House of Representatives election.
Metuh, in a statement, aligned with Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s position on rotational leadership, arguing that the practice has promoted equity, reduced political tension, and ensured more balanced development across the state.
He noted that since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999, Anambra State has maintained a rotation of the governorship among its three senatorial districts, which he said has strengthened inclusiveness and governance outcomes.
According to him, the principle of zoning has also become entrenched in other elective positions within the state, including federal legislative seats.
Focusing on the Idemili Federal Constituency, which comprises Idemili North and Idemili South Local Government Areas, Metuh argued that the House of Representatives seat has historically favoured Idemili South, making it necessary for power to rotate to Idemili North in 2027.
He cited electoral records indicating that Idemili South has held the seat for a longer period since 1999, while Idemili North has had comparatively fewer terms.
Metuh warned against attempts to disrupt what he described as an established political arrangement, stressing that abandoning rotation could undermine fairness and stability in the constituency.
He urged stakeholders in the area to uphold the zoning principle, describing it as essential for peaceful coexistence and equitable representation.
The aspirant further called on political actors to prioritise party consensus and support the implementation of rotation in both primary and general elections.
Metuh maintained that sustaining zoning in Idemili would strengthen democratic participation and preserve the constituency’s record of political inclusiveness.
