Joseph Aloba, father of late Nigerian singer Mohbad, has raised concerns after two of the three laboratories approved by a court to conduct a DNA test on his grandson reportedly indicated they lack the capacity to carry out the procedure.
Aloba’s lawyer, Oladayo Ogungbe, said the laboratories nominated by Wunmi Aloba and a welfare officer of the Lagos State Government disclosed they do not offer DNA testing services, following preliminary verification of their capabilities.
Reacting in a viral TikTok video, Aloba described the development as troubling, alleging attempts to obstruct efforts to uncover the truth surrounding his son’s death. He questioned the credibility of the nominated facilities and claimed a pattern of questionable selections in previous investigative processes, including pathology and toxicology tests.
Aloba also appealed to authorities to ensure a credible DNA test is conducted, stressing that the outcome is crucial to resolving paternity issues and proceeding with his son’s burial. He added that he would consult his legal team on the possibility of transferring the case to another jurisdiction.
In February, a Magistrate’s Court in Ikorodu approved three overseas laboratories to conduct the DNA test. These include DNA Diagnostics Center, nominated by the applicant; AlphaBiolabs, proposed by the respondent; and Advanced Histopathology Laboratory Limited, selected by the court through its welfare officer.
Presiding Magistrate Adefisoye Sonuga granted the application for the test, which seeks to determine the paternity of the child. The case is expected to resume in April, when updates from the laboratories will be presented.
The dispute over the DNA test remains central to ongoing legal proceedings surrounding the late singer’s death.
