The Brazilian government has officially announced Nigeria’s admission as a partner country in the multinational bloc BRICS, marking a significant step in fostering cooperation among nations of the Global South.
In a statement released by Brazil, the bloc highlighted the shared priorities between BRICS and Nigeria, particularly in enhancing South-South collaboration and advocating for the reform of international organizations.
“With the world’s sixth-largest population—and Africa’s largest—as well as being one of the continent’s major economies, Nigeria shares convergent interests with other members of BRICS. It plays an active role in strengthening South-South cooperation and in reforming global governance—issues that are top priorities during Brazil’s current presidency,” the statement read.
Nigeria joins the ranks of Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan as the ninth partner country of BRICS. The partnership category was introduced at the bloc’s 16th Summit, held in Kazan, Russia, in October 2024.
The inclusion of Nigeria underscores its growing prominence on the global stage, reflecting its economic significance and commitment to advancing multilateral collaboration in alignment with BRICS’ objectives.
