The Nigerian entertainment industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of Alexx Ekubo, the popular actor, model and entertainer, who died on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at the age of 40.
His death has sparked an outpouring of grief across Nollywood and among fans across Africa and the diaspora who admired his talent, charisma and screen presence.
The actor’s family confirmed his passing in a statement posted on his verified Instagram page, disclosing that he died at Evercare Hospital following complications from advanced metastatic kidney cancer after what was described as a brief but courageous battle.
Born Alexx Ekubo-Okwaraeke on April 10, 1986, in Port Harcourt, the actor hailed from Arochukwu in Abia State. He was known for his eloquence and fluency in Igbo, Hausa and English.
Ekubo attended Federal Government College, Daura, for his secondary education before studying Mass Communication at Calabar Polytechnic. He later enrolled to study Law at the University of Calabar.
Driven by his passion for performance and storytelling, he returned to the University of Calabar in 2015 to study Theatre Arts, a move that further shaped the career that would make him one of Nollywood’s most recognisable stars.
He first gained national attention in 2010 after emerging first runner-up in the Mr Nigeria Pageant, a feat that opened doors to modelling and the entertainment industry.
Although he began acting in 2005 with a minor role in Sinners in the House, his breakthrough came with Weekend Getaway, for which he won the Best Actor in a Supporting Role award at the Best of Nollywood Awards in 2013.
Over the years, Ekubo built a reputation as one of Nollywood’s most versatile and dependable actors, starring in films such as The Bling Lagosians, Okafor’s Law, Aina and Lagos Cougars.
Known for his charm, fashion sense and comic timing, he became a favourite among audiences for his performances in romantic comedies, dramas and action films.
Beyond acting, Ekubo was also a master of ceremonies, producer, motivational speaker and brand ambassador.
In 2020, he was inducted into the Most Influential People of African Descent list in recognition of his contributions to entertainment and humanitarian causes.
The actor, who maintained a strong social media presence for years, had in recent times withdrawn from public attention following personal challenges. His reduced public appearances and noticeable weight loss in late 2024 had sparked concerns among fans, though colleagues at the time said he had simply chosen to step away from social media pressures.
News of his death has since triggered tributes from colleagues and fans across the entertainment industry.
Celebrities including Funke Akindele and Bolanle Ninalowo have described him as a gifted actor, dependable colleague and warm-hearted friend.
Fans have also flooded social media with condolence messages and tributes, celebrating the life and legacy of an entertainer whose performances brought joy to millions.
Ekubo’s rise from pageantry to movie stardom remains one of Nollywood’s notable success stories, reflecting a career built on talent, discipline and resilience.
Industry observers say his contributions helped shape contemporary Nollywood and further elevated the global profile of African cinema.
