Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has been named the recipient of the 2026 Global Transformation and Good Governance Prize by the Millennium Excellence Awards USA.
The award was conferred on Sanwo-Olu following a rigorous selection process that recognised the achievements and developmental progress recorded in Lagos State under his administration.
In a letter delivered by the Board of Directors of the Millennium Excellence Foundation (MEF), the foundation said the governor had been selected for one of its most prestigious honours.
The award is presented under the royal patronage of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene of Kumasi, who will personally confer the honour alongside Her Royal Highness Lady Julia, Queen Consort, at the ceremony.
The Millennium Excellence Awards USA recognises outstanding individuals of African heritage and global contributors who have made significant contributions to business, science, arts, philanthropy and public service.
The ceremony is scheduled to hold at the Warner Theatre in Washington DC on Saturday, August 29, 2026, with the red carpet beginning at 2:30 p.m.
Sanwo-Olu is expected to deliver a keynote address on positioning Lagos, Africa’s largest sub-national economy, to attract investment from diaspora communities, particularly in urban infrastructure, finance and the state’s investment-ready projects.
He will also participate in sessions, plenaries and roundtable discussions focused on strengthening economic and social ties between Lagos and the diaspora.
Past laureates include Archbishop Desmond Tutu, former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Mo Ibrahim, Wole Soyinka, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Aliko Dangote, Tony Elumelu and former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama.
