Tinubu Assures Commitment to Global Sustainability at Summit

By Ayomide Otitoju

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured the international community that Nigeria is committed to partnering with nations to build a resilient, equitable, and sustainable world. Speaking Wednesday at the 2025 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, President Tinubu addressed the theme, “From Climate Imperatives into Economic Prosperity: Bridging Africa with the Global Energy Future.”

Emphasizing the importance of collective action, Tinubu said, “The fight against climate change is not merely an environmental necessity but a global economic opportunity to reshape the trajectory of our continent and the global energy landscape. No single nation can walk this road alone.”

Nigeria’s Commitment to Sustainability
The President outlined Nigeria’s sustainability vision, built on three pillars: Energy Transition, Climate Resilience, and Sustainable Development. He reiterated his administration’s dedication to reducing carbon emissions and transitioning to cleaner energy sources as part of its national development strategy.

“Nigeria is developing infrastructure for the widespread use of compressed natural gas and electric vehicles, while also leveraging solid minerals to support the green energy transition,” he said.

Tinubu highlighted ongoing climate-smart agricultural practices designed to boost food security while minimizing environmental harm, as well as the National Clean Cooking Policy, aimed at promoting clean energy and socio-economic development.

Tackling Environmental Challenges
Acknowledging Nigeria’s environmental challenges—deforestation, desertification, coastal erosion, flooding, and pollution—Tinubu stressed the need for innovative, localized solutions. “These challenges threaten the livelihoods of millions. We are working with local communities to mitigate their impact and build resilience,” he said.

Call for Global Partnerships
The President called on partner countries, multinational organizations, and development partners to collaborate in mobilizing resources and investing in sustainable practices across Africa.

“Nigeria became the first African nation to initiate funding for green projects through Sovereign Green Bond proceeds, with a third issuance currently in progress. We urge investors to partner with us to realize a sustainable, prosperous, and equitable future,” Tinubu said.

Technological Innovations
Highlighting the role of technology, Tinubu pointed to Nigeria’s potential in advanced agricultural technologies and artificial intelligence to address environmental challenges and unlock economic opportunities.

He commended UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for his leadership in organizing the event, which brought global leaders together to discuss solutions to pressing challenges.

The Abu Dhabi forum served as a platform for leaders to exchange ideas and commitments, with Tinubu positioning Nigeria as a key player in global efforts to advance sustainability and energy transition.
