Filmmaker Toyin Abraham’s Nollywood comedy Oversabi Aunty has grossed over ₦1 billion, marking a historic milestone for her directorial debut, FilmOne Entertainment announced on Monday.
The distributor revealed on its official X account that the film earned ₦1,017,201,953, making it the first Nollywood directorial debut to surpass the ₦1 billion mark and the fourth highest-grossing Nollywood film of all time.
“₦1 Billion+ at the box office. First Nollywood directorial debut to hit ₦1 Billion. 4th-highest-grossing Nollywood film of all time. West Africa, this is a full celebration!!!” FilmOne wrote.
Reacting on Instagram, Abraham thanked God, her fans, cast, crew, and the distribution team. “My first directorial debut on the big screen. Oversabi Aunty to the world and still showing in cinemas near you. Thank you, God. Thank you, Toyintitans. Thank you, Nigerians. Thanks to my cast. Thanks to my crew. Thank you, FilmOne. Thank you, everyone. I’m short of words,” she said.
Released in December 2025, Oversabi Aunty follows the story of an overzealous church usher whose constant interference in family affairs triggers chaotic and comedic consequences. The film stars Abraham alongside Mike Ezuruonye and Odunlade Adekola and has been praised for its relatable humour and cultural themes.
FilmOne also announced that Funke Akindele’s Behind The Scenes has now grossed ₦2.4 billion, making it the highest-grossing Nollywood film of the year. The film, released in December 2025, became the first Nollywood production to surpass ₦2 billion, completing its cinema run at approximately ₦2.103 billion within a month.
With this milestone, Akindele becomes the only Nigerian filmmaker to have three films—Behind The Scenes, Everybody Loves Jenifa, and A Tribe Called Judah—each gross over ₦1 billion, with a combined total of about ₦5.39 billion at the Nigerian box office. She has also led the African box office for three consecutive years, from 2023 to 2025, solidifying her position as Nollywood’s most commercially successful filmmaker.
