The British Council has been formally recognised by UNESCO as a member of two major global education initiatives: the Global Education Coalition and the International Task Force on Teachers for Education 2030. The memberships reinforce the British Council’s commitment to global education recovery, equity, and innovation, and enhance its role in shaping international policy and partnerships for inclusive, quality teaching and learning.
Launched by UNESCO in 2020, the Global Education Coalition initially aimed to mitigate educational disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Post-pandemic, its priorities have evolved to support Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4), which focuses on inclusive, equitable, and quality education and lifelong learning for all. With over 200 partners—including governments, multilateral organisations, civil society and the private sector—the Coalition drives transformation in education globally. As a member, the British Council will leverage its expertise in teacher development, English language education, and inclusive learning to help countries build resilient, future-ready education systems.
The British Council has also joined the International Task Force on Teachers for Education 2030, or Teacher Task Force (TTF), a global alliance addressing the worldwide teacher shortage and advocating for the status, support, and professional development of educators. TTF members include national governments, UN agencies, NGOs, development agencies, civil society and private sector organisations.
With over 90 years of experience in teacher education and professional development worldwide, the British Council brings extensive knowledge and networks, particularly in supporting educators in fragile, multilingual, or under-resourced contexts.
“Coordinated action for education has never been more urgent,” said a spokesperson. “Our participation in these global initiatives will amplify the voices of teachers and learners, especially in communities with limited opportunities. We look forward to collaborating with global partners to share best practices, co-create solutions, and champion inclusive, high-quality education as a foundation for peace, prosperity, and social cohesion.”
The British Council runs a range of education programmes aimed at improving teaching quality, learning outcomes, and equity. Its work spans large-scale teacher development initiatives in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, innovative digital learning platforms, and support for English language teachers in conflict-affected regions. Partnering with ministries of education, schools, universities, and civil society, the organisation ensures its interventions are research-based, locally responsive, and scalable.
In 2025-26, the British Council partnered with over 50 ministries of education and hosts the world’s largest online community of practice for 3.9 million teachers and teacher educators. Its participation in the Global Education Coalition and Teacher Task Force will expand opportunities to support ministries, school leaders, teachers, and young people through evidence-based programmes, peer learning networks, and scalable innovations.
By engaging in these global platforms, the British Council aims to ensure that educators and learners everywhere benefit from international collaboration, policy alignment, and sustained investment in education.
